The fear I thought I didn't have

The fear I thought I didn't have

Hey Reader, Suraj here –

As some of you already know, I recently made a big purchase–I bought a camera.

Prior to owning a camera, whenever I’d watch people’s vlogs, I’d always think that I too could easily do it, and perhaps even better. Since getting the camera, I’ve carried it with me almost everywhere I’ve gone. I must, however, admit that I’ve rarely taken it out of my bag.

The reason has been that I’m worried about getting my camera stolen. Turns out that this is not a rare occurrence. A lot of people have had their gear stolen and still have PTSD about that. I tried to find if there was a way to install a tracker in my camera, but there wasn’t. I also avoid carrying my tripod with me because that easily gives away that I might have expensive gear with me. I even put a tape over the camera logo and model number to not only make it more minimal but also to make it appear like an old camera.

Here’s a photo:

But the more I think about it, the more I realize that the people who vlog or make videos in public regularly have had to overcome this fear. At the end of the day, if I don’t use the camera to take photos or make videos, what’s even the point of owning a camera or learning all the skills I learned?

The output counts, and for that, the input matters.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to make an active effort to overcome this fear. My goal is to make something worthwhile with this investment I’ve made.

I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.

See you next week.

Warmly,
Suraj

what to do in life cover image

By Suraj Chaudhary What to do in life? Read on my website Dear Reader, Suraj here – How do you figure out what you want to do in life? This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately while re-reading So Good They Can’t Ignore You. Cal Newport, the author, would suggest that passion is a result of developing rare and valuable skills, not the starting point for finding a job you love. This would imply that, to figure out how you want to spend your life, you should focus not necessarily...

on perspective cover image

By Suraj Chaudhary On perspective Read on my website Dear Reader, Suraj here – I hate to admit but I’m a captious person. I have a tendency to form opinions about others instantly. A part of this is definitely my intuition, but that is not the whole picture. Although this approach has often saved me from trouble, there have been more than one instance when I’ve judged someone way too quickly. For a while, I thought that I was past it, but as I’ve come to learn, that is not the case. When out...

Filial piety cover

By Suraj Chaudhary Filial Piety Read on my website Hey Reader, Suraj here – There is a particular kind of frustration that arises in conversation with one’s parents — not the clean frustration of a stranger who does not understand, but something heavier. It is the frustration of someone who loves, who wishes to be understood, and who cannot find the words to bridge the distance. Confucius addresses this frustration with a precision that is easy to miss on a first reading of The Analects. His...
