On childhood

On childhood

Read on my website

Hey Reader, Suraj here –

This week, in one of my honors classes, my professor asked us to freewrite about 3 topics:

  1. Nature
  2. Childhood
  3. Home

For childhood, I wrote the following:

I don’t recall much of childhood. At a young age, I moved away from my parents to the city for education. Always working towards getting better grades. Not much playing except for with my elder brother and his friends sometimes. I think I’d change things if I could, but then, if not for the exact childhood I had, would I even be who I am? Probably not. Hence, I will not change a thing.

There have been multiple instances when I’ve been glad that I matured much faster than my peers. I was glad that I was always thinking about the future and, as a result, started learning skills early on.

However, there have also been times when I’ve wished things were different.

It would’ve been nice if I were able to experience more of what other kids did, in terms of playing, I mean. If I’m honest, I’ll have to admit that I brought this on myself.

Nobody asked me to grow up; I wanted to become responsible and independent.

Growing up fast might be the reason why, even now, I struggle to just be present. I’m always working towards the future to provide for my family and take care of my parents.

That’s something I might have to overcome. Not necessarily to not think about the future at all, but to find a balance perhaps. To be able to be present in moments without the constant worry of the future.

Let’s see how that goes.

I’ll see you next week.

Warmly,
Suraj

Parts of me cover photo

By Suraj Chaudhary Parts of me Read on my website Dear Reader, Suraj here – After my writing on hobbies, I did some reflecting on what I could pursue as a ritual. A hobby, yes, but I wanted something that I could make a ritual in my life: something meditative. I’m happy to share that I’ve found something. Photography and filmmaking have been amongst the dozens of things that I’ve dabbled with over the years. I remember when I was in middle and high school, I’d watch hundreds of YouTube videos...

howNotToJournal

By Suraj Chaudhary How not to journal Read on my website Hi Reader, I tend to skip the process whenever I can. I look forward only to the goal. This would explain why I’ve dabbled with so many things. I’ve been pulled by the result something might bring, rather than appreciating the process. Journaling has been one of those things. I journal now and then, but I used to do it every day, primarily to understand myself better. I watched a video about journaling recently. The narrator discussed...

Art by Michael

By Suraj Chaudhary On hobbies Credit: Michael Read on my website Dear Reader, I’ve been feeling like I have too many things going on. So recently, I decided to talk to Michael—a co-worker and friend at the Academic Center—about it. I told him about my list of commitments for this semester, none of which I can abandon. I sought his guidance because he’s a master of juggling many things. He is: a writing tutor at Kingsborough College and my university’s academic center (where I also teach) an...
